Proud 2 Be (LGBTQ+ Week)
Proud 2 Be is a campaign developed your LGBT+ Officer (Tobias Lawrence) to raise awareness and representation of the LGBTQ+ community on campus. This week offers a chance to increase visibility, explore underrepresentation (with focus on those with intersecting identities) as well as general issues faced within the LGBTQ+ community. We also have several videos featuring Newcastle University students sharing their lived experiences.
As a wider society, we have made huge strides in becoming accepting of LGBTQ+ people, however, progression and acceptance are still under threat by UK-wide hate crimes, steeped in homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and racism. Proud 2 Be aims to unite people and educate students on queer history and current issues faced by some within the LGBTQ+ community, to combat structural oppression.
We should all be PROUD 2 BE - to love, live authentically and be true to ourselves.
