Looking after your health is important during your time at Newcastle University as well as during this period of covid-19 and self-isolation. Here at NUSU, we are committed to supporting you in living your best life and we understand that, as a busy student, your mental health and wellbeing can sometimes be affected. Everyone may need a bit of extra support from time to time and although we don’t offer the same counseling service as the University we do have a number of opportunities to help you to the 5 steps to mental wellbeing.

5 Steps to Wellbeing at the Students' Union

As a member of NUSU, you have access to many opportunities including, societies, sports clubs and volunteering to help improve your wellbeing alongside your studies. If you give them a try, you may feel happier, more positive and able to get the most from Uni life.

Remember……high levels of wellbeing and resilience don’t just lead to fewer mental health problems. Good levels of wellbeing are associated with:

  • Improved learning and academic achievement
  • Reduced absence from work due to sickness
  • Reductions in risk-taking behaviours
  • Improved physical health
  • Increased community involvement

 

1. Connect

Connect – connect with the people around you: Building stronger, wider social connections can help you feel happier and more secure.

How to connect with NUSU:

What’s On at NUSU? You can find a truly diverse list of events here with something for everyone.

Societies -  With over 160 societies, from 20 Minute Society to Zumba, we're sure that you'll find a society that matches your interests. There is also the Mind the Gap Society which aims to work with students, the local community and mental health charities and organisations to inform, raise awareness and discuss mental health issues.

Go Volunteer have over 150 projects varying from one-off projects to long-term opportunities, meaning you really can tailor your volunteering to fit around your University life.

Give It A Go (GIAG) - If you want to try something completely new, Give It A Go is the perfect choice for you. A great chance to meet new people, blow off steam and have a bit of fun while you’re at University.

 

2. Be Active

Be active – you don't have to go to the gym, take a walk, go cycling or play a game of football. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life.

How to be active with NUSU-

AU (Athletic Union) -   With 65 sports clubs run through your AU, NUSU has an endless supply of sporting activities to help you keep active. You can join as a social member or compete in the weekly British University and Colleges Sport (better known as BUCS) fixtures.

Inclusive Sport includes programmes and initiatives aimed to increase engagement with sport, remove barriers and offer support to all students.  This also includes our disability sports programme.


GIAG - Give It A Go offer active sessions including badminton, squash and Thai Chi.

 

3.Keep Learning

Keep learning – learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and a new confidence. It doesn't have to mean getting more qualifications. There are lots of different ways to bring learning into your life.

Here are just a few ways to Keep Learning with NUSU-

Get involved with Student Media. At NUSU we have a newspaper, radio station and television station, lots of opportunities for students who want to learn more about the many aspects of media.

Learn more about student democracy at Student Council.

Find out about the city on the ‘Top of Grey’s Monument Tour’.

Listen to a new band in The Venue.

 

4. Give to Others

Give to others – Small acts of kindness towards other people, or larger ones like volunteering in your local community, can not only give you a sense of purpose and make you feel happier but will lead to connecting with people around you.

How to give to others with NUSU-

Volunteer with Go Volunteer with one of the many local charities they are partnered with.

Get involved with our work in the Community, become a Course or School Rep or get involved in the NUSU Elections with the Your Voice team.

Campaigning is at the heart of NUSU and we support students who want to make positive changes. A great way to give back to other students.

 

5. Be Mindful

Be mindful – be more aware of the present moment. Some people call this awareness "mindfulness". It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.

 

How to be mindful with NUSU –

Write an article on a current issue for The Courier.

Get involved with an environmental project like The Roof Top Garden or Go Green Week and learn to appreciate the beauty of Newcastle.

Watch Your Head is a student led project that offers a variety of Wellbeing Workshops, ranging from art workshops to Diet for the Brain.

Try one of the many holistic sessions, including Yoga and Thai Chi, offered by GIAG here.

 

 

*5 Ways to wellbeing may not be the best fit for everyone and if you feel like you need extra support  from the Student Wellbeing Counselling service, please get in touch.

Silvercloud is a suite of online CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) programmes which can be tailored to a student’s specific needs. CBT can help identify and change thought patterns that have a negative influence on behaviour, helping to change how we are feeling for the better. The programmes are easy to use and flexible as can be accessed anywhere on a PC, tablet or mobile. Silvercloud is available to all Newcastle University students, free of charge
