Covid FAQs
Meet Jill - Senior Adviser
Hello I'm Jill and I'm one of the managers of the SAC as well as being a long established adviser with 26 years experience under my belt – 18 of them at NUSU! Although when I started work in the SAC it was called The Union Society and had a hairdressers, a book shop and 5 different bars in the building! I love helping students with their issues and nothing makes me happier to hear of a happy ending to a problem, which doesn’t happen all the time however! Outside of work I am married with a teenage son and 3 cats who keep me company whilst I'm working remotely and I love a good horror film!

Meet Ruth - Senior Adviser
Hi I'm Ruth and I'm a Senior Student Adviser at the SAC. I co-manage the service with Jill and have previously worked as a Senior Administrator at Northumbria Business School Admissions department and before that worked as an Administrative Assistant for the Student Advice Centre at Newcastle College Student Services department where I provided a range of student support. I worked as a volunteer for Gateshead Citizens Advice in 1994 undertaking their adviser training and in 2004 as a YMCA volunteer mentor for asylum seekers and refugees. I love reading and pottery, I'm a regular runner and I adore my little Shihpoo dog.

Meet Alexia - Adviser
Hello, I'm Alexia and I'm a part-time Generalist Adviser at the SAC. I have 20 years experience in the education sector, and have been at the SAC since 2016. I have had various volunteering roles, including as a support worker for a free counselling organisation for young people. I'm originally from Portsmouth, but have been fortunate enough to experience living abroad, in both Luxembourg and France, although my French is still atrocious (and I have a french husband, so I have no excuse!). I have two wonderfully crazy children, and an adorable dog, who hates the postman but loves to show his face during video calls, so if you have an appointment with me, you might be lucky enough to spot him! In my spare time I exercise as much as I can, as I love the way it makes me feel afterwards (and it means I can eat more chocolate!). .

Meet Emily - Adviser
Hi, I’m Emily and I am a full-time Adviser at the SAC! I have had experience working in student facing roles in Universities in the North East and love listening to and helping students. I am usually the Volunteer Coordinator but this year the scheme has sadly been postponed due to Covid-19 so I am looking forward to when we can welcome new volunteers. During lockdown, I have been taking this time to learn new things like earring making, learning to machine sew and have been testing my baking skills - some more successful than others….

Meet Lauren
(she/her)
- Administrative Support
Hello I'm Lauren and I'll be the first person you speak to at the SAC. My role includes all the background administration for the service such as booking appointments, case records management, report and statistics monitoring, information provision, service promotion and basic website editing. Usually I really enjoy working with our student volunteers, but I'm really missing them while working from home! Outside work I spend most of my time reading and (weather permitted) walking, as well as volunteering with NEST. Originally from 'near' Manchester I moved to Newcastle for my UG in history and haven't been able to bring myself to leave.
