101 and 999

You should always to call 999 when it is an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.

When should I use 101?

You should call 101 to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. For example:

  • Your car has been stolen
  • Your property has been damaged
  • You suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood
  • To report a minor traffic collision
  • To give the police information about crime in your area
  • To speak to the police about a general enquiry

 

Campus Security

  • In-house Security Service staff (University Police) are on duty 24/7 and can be contacted on 0191 208 6817 or via e-mail at security.control@ncl.ac.uk.
  • In an emergency where there is an imminent and serious danger to people or property dial 6-666 to contact the University Security Control Room or dial 9-999 to contact directly to the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services.

Nightline - Term time only

Since being set up by students in Newcastle, Nightline has been listening, providing emotional support and information to students, every night during term time, 8pm-8am. We are student-run and on the other end of the phone when there is no-one else you can talk to.

Samaritans

Samaritans is a confidential emotional support service for anyone in the UK and Ireland.

The service is available 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

If you live outside of the UK and ROI, visit www.befrienders.org to find your nearest helpline.

Volunteers offer support by responding to phone calls, emails and letters. Alternatively people can drop in to a branch to have a face to face meeting.
