Looking after your Mental Health & Wellbeing

Looking after your health is important during your time at Newcastle University as well as during this period of covid-19 and self-isolation. Here at NUSU, we are committed to supporting you in living your best life and we understand that, as a busy student, your mental health and wellbeing can sometimes be affected. Everyone may need a bit of extra support from time to time and although we don’t offer the same counseling service as the University we do have a number of opportunities to help you to the 5 steps to mental wellbeing.

We completely acknowledge that the 5 Steps to wellbeing may not be the best fit for everyone and if you feel like you need extra support for your wellbeing or mental health, please make sure you visit our Mental Health Support page to see what support, resources, and steps are in place to help - remember you are not alone in this.  

 

Step 1 - Connect

"Good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing. They can help you to build a sense of belonging and self-worth, give you an opportunity to share positive experiences, and provide emotional support and allow you to support others" (NHS). Here are some ways that you can connect with NUSU:

  • Events & Activities - You can foster new and existing friendships by getting involved in our events and activities.
  • Societies - share your interests and time with like-minded people.
  • Sports Clubs - Become a part of the Team Newcastle community.   
  • Go Volunteer - join thousands of other students who come together to help make a positive change in the community. 
  • Give It A Go - Try something new alongside new people.

 

Step 2 - Be Active

Being active is not only great for your physical health and fitness. Evidence also shows it can also improve your mental wellbeing by raising your self-esteem, helping you to set goals or challenges and achieve them, and causing chemical changes in your brain which can help to positively change your mood. Here are some ways you can get active with NUSU:

  • Sports Clubs & Social Sports Societies -  There is an endless supply of sporting activities to help you keep active, whether this is competitively, socially, or for fitness. 
  • Give it a Go - Join one of our ctive sessions that work with clubs, societies, campus leagues, as well as external companies to put on a whole host of social sports, taster sessions, mindfulness classes - from badminton to netball, korfball to yoga.

 

Step 3 - Keep Learning

"Research shows that learning new skills can also improve your mental wellbeing by boosting self-confidence and raising self-esteem, helping you to build a sense of purpose, and helping you to connect with others. Even if you feel like you do not have enough time, or you may not need to learn new things, there are lots of different ways to bring learning into your life" (NHS). Here are some ways you learn new skills at NUSU:

  • Student Media - Join in and develop new skills in media, journalism, and broadcasting. This is a perfect chance to learn more about wider issues, and our diverse student community. 
  • Student Democracy & Representation - Find out more about how we support students through Student Council, and get involved in helping make positive change. 
  • Try something new and find out skills you didn't realise you had (or enjoyed) with Give it a Go.

 

Step 4 - Give to Others

"Research suggests that acts of giving and kindness can help improve your mental wellbeing by creating positive feelings and a sense of reward, giving you a feeling of purpose and self-worth, and helping you connect with other people. It could be small acts of kindness towards other people or larger ones like volunteering in your local community" (NHS). You can help give to others at NUSU by:

  • Go Volunteer is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help them with local charities they are partnered with.
  • Your Voice - Help improve the student experience as an Academic Rep, Officer, or voluntary Liberation representative. 
  • Campaigning - Help make positive changes. A great way to give back to other students.

 

Step 5 - Be Mindful

"Paying more attention to the present moment can improve your mental wellbeing. This includes your thoughts and feelings, your body, and the world around you. Some people call this awareness "mindfulness". Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges" (NHS).
