The Teaching Excellence Awards (TEAs) 2016-17
Nominations for the Teaching Excellence Awards (TEAs) are now open! The TEAs are your chance to nominate members of staff who you think have been outstanding and helped improve your student experience at the University. This year we have eight categories which you can nominate members of staff for. These categories are:
- Outstanding Contribution to Innovation
- Professional Services Staff Member of the Year
- Outstanding Contribution to Pastoral Support
- Postgraduate Student who Teaches of the Year
- Outstanding Contribution to Feedback
- Taught Supervisor of the Year
- Research Supervisor of the Year
- Outstanding Contribution to Teaching*
*There will be one Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Award for each Faculty and one to cover both the University’s two Overseas Campuses and the University’s Campus in London.
How to Nominate
To nominate a member of staff for an award you need to complete the nomination form. To complete the nomination you will need to answer three questions about the member of staff:
- Using examples of their approach or practice, explain why you have nominated this member of staff for a Teaching Excellence Award in the chosen category?
- Explain how you feel the above has had a positive impact on your student experience? (e.g. How did it help with the success of a project, or clarify complex issues, or made you feel more able/confident)
- Detail any other reasons why you think this member of staff deserves to win a Teaching Excellence Award?
To give the staff member you are nominating the best chance of winning, it is important that you go into detail when answering each of the three questions. Examples of comments written about some of last year’s winners include:
Outstanding Contribution to Feedback
“They make themselves available to address any queries or concerns, even rearranging their family commitments to make time for anxious students. They also run feedback clinics, involving small numbers of students to get extra help on the difficult task of scientific report writing. They take time to explain exactly how a student can improve their work, with examples from the student’s own work. This means the feedback is specifically tailored to individual students, and they deliver advice on a level the student can understand. Most importantly of all, they do all of this exuding positivity and encouragement.”
Outstanding Contribution to Pastoral Support
“They are always readily available and will go out of their way to support the students and make sure they can cope with their degree, often seeking out students when they most need support and a timely boost. They go above and beyond to help their students and even though there is constantly a line at their door they never makes you feel like your problems aren't important.
They understand that students are very stressed and they never judge, which is so important as it breaks down any wall between lecturer and student. They make it feel like going to speak to a friend when you go to their office and that can be a difficult thing to find at a busy university.”
The information we gather from your nominations is really important to us as we may share your comments anonymously:
- With the member of staff you nominate
- Your Head of School or Institute
- The University’s Learning and Teaching Development Service
- In TEAs publicity
- In reports and presentations
This not only helps makes the member of staff feel amazing but it also helps the University improve the teaching and support provided to you, the students!
Nominations close at 9am on Monday 13 March. We will then shortlist between three and five members of staff for each award, depending on the award, with the winners announced on 4 May at a glitzy awards ceremony.
