Women enjoying a celebration at The Angelou Centre
The Angelou Centre
The Angelou Centre is a black-led women’s centre based in Newcastle. They offer a range of holistic women-only services for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) women across the North East region.
Go Volunteer has linked in with The Angelou Centre to support three of their voluntary projects:
(1) ‘Reading Buddies’ takes place weekly at Newcastle City Library. Go Volunteer Reading Buddies work in pairs with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students helping to improve literacy skills and confidence.
(2) The Angelou Centre runs weekly IT classes. Go Volunteer IT tutors support the classes helping to develop and improve basic IT skills.
(3) Finally, with the help of Go Volunteer, the Angelou centre is running a singing group. The ladies are given the space to use their voices and learn uplifting songs by meeting once a week at the centre.
In a recent feedback form filled in by the ESOL students, every student noted that the Go Volunteer Reading Buddies are very friendly. Around 15 volunteers have come to us from Go Volunteer and have helped support 19 ESOL students. As well as the Reading Buddies project, two students from Newcastle University volunteer in our weekly IT session. They are always punctual and friendly and work very well alongside the women who attend. Another student is working alongside our team to lead our Angelou Singing group. The first session had all participants singing and laughing! We are very happy with our student volunteers and are grateful that we were able to set this up with the help of Go Volunteer.
Thank you to all the student volunteers for their continued support!
