  • Volunteer Befriender

    West End Refugee Service (WERS) is a registered charity which provides support services for asylum seekers and refugees in a friendly, welcoming environment. Our range of integrated services aims to address the disadvantage, exclusion and poverty which affect asylum seekers and refugees living in the West End of Newcastle. Volunteer Befriender We are looking for befrienders to spend a few hours weekly or fortnightly to help an asylum seeker or refugee feel more welcome, supported and integrated in the local community. You will visit the person you befriend at home or go out for short trips in the local area. Befrienders must be able to: make a good relationship with the person you befriend, maintain confidentiality, work sensitively and offer support to others. You need to commit for a minimum of 6 months after completing induction training and attend 6 monthly supervisions with a staff member. We are looking for volunteers who are: • Good listeners & good communicators • Non-judgmental and respectful of others • Reliable and consistent when making arrangements and building a befriending relationship • Able to maintain confidentiality • Able to understand and adhere to the boundaries set out by WERS Previous experience of supporting refugees or asylum seekers is not necessary.

Our range of integrated services aims to address the disadvantage, exclusion and poverty which affect asylum seekers and refugees living in the West End of Newcastle. skillsmatch is an online platform that matches the skills, experiences and interests of asylum seekers and refugees with a broad range of volunteering opportunities in the Newcastle area. skillsmatch buddies provide one-to-one support to clients who are interested in accessing these volunteering opportunities. Volunteer buddies assist clients with writing their profiles for the skillsmatch website, help them to identify and positively articulate their skills, experience and interests, and support with the application process and initial visits to their chosen volunteer role. We are looking for volunteers who: • Have an ability to make a good relationship with the person you are buddying • Have an ability to work sensitively and offer support to others • Have good listening and communication skills • Possess good IT skills (web, email, Microsoft Office) • Can maintain confidentiality • Can provide support in a non-judgemental, consistent and reliable way • Are willing to complete all parts of the induction training, additional mandatory training and 6 monthly supervision • Have a few hours free at least once a fortnight during a weekday • Can volunteer for a minimum of 6 months

    West End Refugee Service (WERS) is a registered charity which provides support services for asylum seekers and refugees in a friendly, welcoming environment. Our range of integrated services aims to address the disadvantage, exclusion and poverty which affect asylum seekers and refugees living in the West End of Newcastle. Clothing store volunteers give a few hours of their time each week to help with the daily running of our busy store. These volunteers play an important role in making sure that the clothing store is a relaxed and welcoming place, providing asylum seekers and refugees with a good choice of essential clothing, footwear and household items. Duties include helping clients find and check out items, receiving and sorting donations, and restocking the store. Many of our clothing store volunteers are WERS clients. Volunteering once per week provides a welcome opportunity to help others, to contribute something positive and for some, to gain work experience in the UK. We are now looking for ‘Warehouse’ volunteers as well, to compliment the team who volunteer in the clothing store. Warehouse volunteer duties will include sorting through donations in the store room, taking unusable items for recycling and assisting with the stocking of the store after closing hours.
