Students’ Union Officers are elected by you the students. Paid for by NUSU, 7 Sabbatical Officers run the Students’ Union on behalf of all the students at Newcastle University. Our students also elect Liberation Officers & NUSU Chairs to sit on committees and represent your opinions.
Our Trustee Board
Having become a registered charity in 2009, Newcastle University Students' Union is required to have a board of trustees in place. The trustees ensure NUSU is meeting the legal and financial requirements, whilst also providing guidance and structure for future strategies and decision-making. Our board of trustees consists of six Full-time Sabbatical Officers (elected by you), two appointed students and four external members, chosen based on their level of experience, knowledge and skills.
Ben is a Management Consultant specialising in IT and Project and Programme delivery based just south of Manchester. Over the last fourteen years, he has worked on and delivered major projects and programmes of work in Government, Healthcare and Telecommunications sectors in the UK, Europe and Asia. Prior to beginning his career, Ben graduated with a BA (Hons) in Music from Newcastle in 1996, before organising the First Year Conference (Freshers' Week) in 1996, and holding the position of President of the Student Union in 1997-8.
David studied Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University from 1974 to 1978. He has recently taken early retirement after 40 years in business. David has spent his career in the engineering field of manufacturing, contracting and consultancy both in the UK and international, most of this in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals and rail sectors. Along with his engineering skills he has project and programme management experience and has led businesses in a senior management capacity for the last 27 years.
Sohail is a highly experienced International Retailer with 20+ years working for a best in class global retail business. Sohail has travelled extensively in his career to 50+ countries and as Managing Director of International Franchise for Mothercare PLC is accountable for Global Retail Sales of £700m. Sohail has great memories of his time at Newcastle University where he completed a BA (hons) in Economics & Accounting in 1994 and stays close to the University as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Newcastle University Business School.
Jon is a journalist, TV producer, media trainer and communications consultant. He attended Newcastle University from 1993-96 and stayed in the region after graduating to train as a reporter with the North East daily newspaper The Journal. He moved to London in 1999 and since then has worked for a wide range of magazines, newspapers and TV news programmes.
Elias Al Dahan
(Student Trustee). Elias studies MPlan at Newcastle University and is currently in his third year. Throughout his studies, he’s played a number of roles such as the School Rep for Architecture, Planning and Landscape (2019/20), Disciplinary Committee member at NUSU’s Student Council and holds student society committee positions including Vice-President of the Politics Society and Treasurer of NUCS (2020/21).
Sarah studied Business, Accounting and Finance at Newcastle University from 2002-2006 and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant. She spent 13 years at PwC working in their London, New York and Sydney offices, working on mergers and acquisitions and listings on the stock exchange. She is now a consultant in the travel industry based in London. Sarah is also a member of the International Advisory Board for the Newcastle University Business School.
(Student Trustee). Tim is a PGR in Geospatial Engineering, having joined Newcastle University as an undergraduate in 2015. He has been an active member of NUSU throughout his studies, as a member of Student Council, Societies Executive Committee, and holding numerous society committee positions across the Scout and Guide society, Jazz Orchestra and Wind Band. His contributions to student life, both individually and collectively with others, have seen him win multiple awards. He is also an Assistant County Commissioner for Northumberland Scouts.
