When is Council meeting?
Student Council takes place six times a year and all Newcastle University students are invited to attend each meeting. Council is currently taking place via Zoom (due to social distancing measures) on the dates states below. You are able to sign onto one of our casual voting spaces or just turn up to take part in the debate.
If you's like to attend without a voting place, drop us an email here and we will let you know the link to attend virtually.
Sign-up for a Casual Voting Place
There are 65 voting spaces at the Student Council. 8 places are allocated to selected students at the first council (Open Voting places), 20 places are allocated for any student wanting to attend (Casual Voting places) and the remainder is allocated for NUSU representatives (Fixed voting places).
Please note: If more than 20 students register for a Casual Place, places will be allocated using a random number generator and you will be notified by email by 12 noon the day before Council to let you know if you have/haven’t been allocated a place.

Voting Places Explained
Although all students are invited to attend, there are only 65 voting places. The majority of these voting places are taken up by representatives from different areas of NUSU; from officer positions in clubs and societies to those involved in student media. These representatives are usually elected by the relevant executive committees, for example, Societies Exec and Education Exec.
The remaining places are split between Open Voting spaces and Casual voting places.
Open Voting Places
Students are elected to the 8 Open Places at the first Student Council meeting of the year and those who are elected into position have the voting place for all six meetings for that academic year.
Casual Voting Places
The 20 Casual voting spaces are allocated to students that sign-up (using the sign-up below) for each individual council meeting.
Each Student Council meeting holds 20 Casual Places which will be made available to any student who wishes to attend that particular meeting and vote. If you would like to apply for a casual place, complete the sign-up form below (you will need to log in to the website first). The deadline for applying for a Casual Place is 48 hours before each meeting, so usually the Tuesday before at 5pm. If more than 20 students register for a Casual Place, places will be allocated using a random number generator and you will be notified by email by 12 noon the day before Council to let you know if you have/haven’t been allocated a place.
If you are not allocated a Casual Place or you are not fussed about voting, you can still attend our Council meetings, eat the free food and participate in the meeting. You just won't be able to vote on the motions or reports. In addition, if any student who has been allocated a Casual Place doesn’t turn up by the start of the meeting, their place will be re-allocated.
